The interesting AI conversations are happening at the edges. Inside healthcare. Inside finance. Inside licensed trades. Anywhere a wrong output is something a human is going to have to defend in front of a regulator, a lawyer, or a judge.
That is where you find out what AI actually is, because that is where the comfortable framings stop working.
The Healthcare Pattern
The FDA has cleared more than a thousand AI and machine-learning-enabled medical devices, and the pace is accelerating. Most people outside the field have no idea this has been happening. They picture AI in medicine as a future tense.
It is a present tense, and it has a paper trail.
Every cleared device required a documented validation study. A defined intended use. A risk classification. A change-control plan for when the model gets updated. When a radiologist uses an AI tool to flag a possible lesion, that interaction is happening inside a framework where someone, somewhere, has signed their name next to a document that says "this tool does this thing inside these limits and we tested it this way."
The AI plus regulator model is not theoretical. It is operational today on more than a thousand devices, and the framework is the boring part that makes the interesting part possible.
The reason this matters for everyone else is that the rest of the economy is about to be required, by law, by litigation, or by client demand, to operate the same way. The healthcare framework is not the exception. It is the preview.
The Finance Pattern
Banking has its own version of this, and it is older.
The Federal Reserve published guidance back in 2011 (SR 11-7) on model risk management. It was originally written for credit risk models and trading models. Every model in production at a regulated bank has an inventory entry, a validator who is independent from the model developer, a risk rating, an intended use statement, and a periodic review schedule. Regulated environments do not just slow AI down. Sometimes they reveal that the use case never really worked. The compliance overhead swallows the productivity gain. The tool gets caveated so heavily that the human stops trusting it and reverts to the old way. The vendor disappears because the unit economics do not survive the audit cycle.
